我们的投资建议:

1)如果你是作短期交易而且手上持有很多股票,我们建议卖出部分股票套现。如果美国股市反转往下掉,大马股市也会受影响;

2)如果你是长期投资者,不妨先等美国股市调整下跌,及大马大选过后再进场;

3)如果你还未进场,应耐心再等多三个月,当情况稳定了才进场;

4)如果大选日期确定了,则应在投票日前先卖掉手头上的股票,避免任何选举的结果影响股市。

GAB vs CARLSBG

1. GAB share price created record high each day. :) Look like RM10 is where it is heading to. As the  share price surge higher the DY become unattractive. It used to be high DY around 8+% but after a recent surge of price its dividend has shrunk to a mere 5% based on current price. It is good for those who got it way back when it is still trading around RM4 to RM5, they would enjoy both capital appreciation and share dividend. :) I do hope that the dividend will step up in order to remain as attractive and resilient as before.

2. GAB has a bigger market share in Malaysia comparing to it peer CARLSBG. This will seem create more room for CARLSBG to grow if GAB continue to up surge into RM10 region. Though, CARLSBG's business has seem lose out to GAB in Malaysia but it synergy with CARLSBG(S) has bear fruit so far. :) The EPS has almost on parred with GAB, which i think it is good sign for CARLBG to do a catch up job Q after Q.

3. Make money online - Just received a cheque from Nuffnang for advertisement effort in my blog. Also another network advertising company Innity has made the payment recently. Good enough for lunch money though. :)

Budget 2010/2011: Comments from Guinness Anchor, Carlsberg

Impact of the Budget 2010/2011 on the beer and stout industry

Charles Ireland, managing director of GUINNESS ANCHOR BHD:

Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) today issued a statement in response to the Government’s move to not impose an increase in excise duty.

GAB welcomes the news that the Government has decided not to raise the excise duty on beer and stout for the coming year, particularly in this economic downturn which has had a significant impact on both businesses and the man-on-the-street.

At the current duty levels, Malaysia already has the second highest duty on beer and stout in the world after Norway.

As such we believe the Government was prudent to not impose another round of excise duty increase as this would have exerted tremendous pressure on the industry that is already operating in an extremely difficult and challenging environment.

It would have also put further pressure on the F&B industry and tourism, who continue to face serious challenges with consumers still cautionary on spending.

GAB hopes that the Government will consider a review of excise duty structure to bring it in line with global best practises. We would like to work with Government to set up a working committee for this purpose.

Soren Ravn, managing director of CARLSBERG BREWERY MALAYSIA BHD:

It was positive that the government had decided not to raise the excise duty on beer and stout for the coming year.

A duty increase would have had adverse impact on all the stakeholders connected to the industry.

The decision was in line with the government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) where the key focus areas, Tourism and the Wholesale and Retail sectors have been identified as National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) of key importance to the Government for driving economic activity, development and growth to transform Malaysia to a higher income nation.

Carlsberg Malaysia will continue to be part of the catalyst to drive the economic growth in the areas of FDIs, Tourism, and Retail sectors while at the same time continuing to reinvest in the local economy through production and capacity expansion; our workforce and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Carlsberg Malaysia is fully committed to Malaysia and will continue to support the government in its economic reform to boost growth and attain developed-nation status.

Next up: Tax hike for brewers?

Now that two of the three so-called “sin sectors”, cigarettes and gaming, have seen taxes raised this year, expectations are high that the brewers are next in line.

Earlier in June 2010, gaming companies saw pool-betting duty raised from 6% to 8%. The latest round of tax increase for cigarette manufacturers, of three sen per stick, was announced earlier this week ahead of Budget 2011, which is to be presented on Oct 15.

Of the three sectors, cigarette manufacturers have been the worst affected, having been slapped with tax hikes every year for the past eight years. By comparison, brewers are “luckier” — they have been spared of any tax increase since 2005.

Back then, the government raised excise duty by 23% to RM7.40 per litre and introduced a new 15% Ad Valorem duty payment on the ex-brewery price for beer products. But at the same time, it also reduced sales tax to 5% of the ex-factory invoice price on all products sold. The net tax increase was thought to be around 8%-9%.

As such, many expect the time is ripe for fresh tax hikes — by as much as 10% — in Budget 2011. The government has hinted as much.

On the other hand, brewers contend that beer taxes in the country are already one of the highest in the world, second only to Norway. Government tax payments amounted to over 48% of Carlsberg Brewery’s revenue last year.

Like the cigarette industry, it is feared that further tax hikes — and the resulting higher selling prices — will fuel smuggling. Smuggled or illicit beer is estimated to make up roughly 20% of the local beer market. Volume sales of the duty-paid malt liquor market dipped in 2005-2006 after the last round of tax hike before recovering in 2007-2008. Industry volume sales are estimated to have declined by roughly 2% in 2009, impacted by the global downturn, but are expected to grow in the single digit this year.

Higher taxes and prices could send volume sales growth back into negative territory — affecting the earnings of the two local breweries, Guinness Anchor and Carlsberg.

Guinness fared better over past few years

Of the two, Guinness appears to have weathered the intensely competitive operating environment better. The company charted steady growth in sales and profits over the past decade, thanks, in part, to its success in gaining a steadily larger slice of the domestic market. At present, its market share is estimated at roughly 57%, up from about 45% back in 2001.

Sales grew at a compounded rate of more than 8% annually, from RM670 million in FYJune01 to RM1.36 billion in FY10. Over the same period, net profit increased at an even faster pace of 11.2% per annum, from RM58.7 million to RM152.7 million in the latest financial year.

By comparison, Carlsberg’s earnings growth has been patchier. Whilst sales increased at a compounded annual rate of about 2.3% between 2000 and 2009, net profit dipped to RM75.9 million last year from RM110 million in 2000. Indeed, Guinness’ shares had outperformed Carlsberg over the past five years. Shares of Guinness are currently trading at RM8.46, compared to RM5.75 at the start of 2006 whilst Carlsberg’s shares are hovering around the same levels as they were five years ago.

Expansion boost for Carlsberg

Nonetheless, Carlsberg’s prospects appear to be looking up. The company has been on an expansion trail, investing in Luen Heng F&B in November 2008 and Carlsberg Singapore in October 2009. The acquisitions have widened both its product range and market base — and appear to be paying dividends.

Carlsberg reported strong earnings in 1H10, boosted by contributions from Carlsberg Singapore. The latter accounted for RM28.7 million of its pre-tax earnings of RM69 million in the first six months of the year, and is well on track to meet the company’s estimated net profit contribution of RM37 million for the full year. At this pace, we estimate Carlsberg’s 2010 net profits to be sharply higher from last year’s RM75.9 million. In addition to operational synergies, the expansion in Carlsberg’s customer base is likely to temper the negative impact of a tax hike in the domestic market.

Carlsberg’s new ventures — Carlsberg Singapore was acquired for RM370 million — have come at the expense of dividends. The company lowered its dividend payout in 2008-2009 to 35% and 51% of profits, respectively, compared with the average payout of 108% in the preceding six years. The company has net debt of RM37.7 million at end-June 2010.

Assuming the same 51% profit payout this year, dividends will total 30 sen per share. That translates into a net yield of 4.3% at the current share price of RM5.20.

Guinness pays higher dividends

Guinness, on the other hand, remains focused primarily on the domestic market. With lower capital expenditure — estimated at roughly RM50 million in the current financial year — dividend payout has stayed high, averaging at some 85% of net profits in the past five years.

The stock will trade ex-entitlement for a final tax-exempt dividend of 35 sen per share on Nov 11.

Assuming dividends totalling 45 sen per share — the same as that for FY10 — in the current year, shareholders will earn a net yield of 5.3% at the prevailing share price of RM8.46.

Guinness is sitting on net cash totalling almost RM150 million at end-June 2010.

Carlsberg - Another Good Q

Carlsberg just announced Q2 result and declared Interim Dividend of 5 Sen and Special Dividend of 2.5 Sen, total up to 7.2sen dividend. Bravo, another good Q !! Net profit of 30m for this Q about 250% increase compare to previous corresponding Q. Thanks to the World Cup and the synergy from Carlsberg (S) aquisition. Earnings per share for the quarter grew to 10.08 sen versus 4.21 sen a year ago.
Simply, by adding Q1 EPS with Q2 EPS, we get 12.38 + 10.08 = 22.46 sen. 2 more Q to go, just X2 we get a total estimated 22.46 * 2 = 44.92sen.

PE = 5.2/44.92 = 11.57
FV = 15 * 44.92 = RM 6.73 (ho ho ho)

Making money just as simple as that. Buy this type of value stock and keep them for long term. AHA, would not it just as simple as 123....
1. buy...
2. keep....
3. rewards....  :) :)

Quick Look At Carlsberg

1Q net profit for CARLSBERG is 37.8millions, increased by 77%. This is the first synergy result after acquired Carlsberg Singapore for RM370mil in the fourth quarter last year.

Assuming :-

1Q EPS = 12.38sen
2Q EPS = ??
3Q EPS = ??
4Q EPS = ??

Forecast the future growth by simply multiply 3 of the remaining Q,
Estimated Total EPS = 12.38 X 4 = 49.52sen
Estimated PE = 9.79sen
Estimated Div Yield = 9%
Estimated Div Payout Ratio = 90%

Estimated FV = 11 X 49.52 = RM5.44

Significantly improved earnings from the synergy effect, likely to make CARLSBG even more appealing. However the forecast maybe just too loose but have given great discount in FV by just merely a low enough figure of 11 times of eps.

Carlsberg Malaysia a 'buy': Maybank

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, the nation’s biggest brewery, was raised to “buy” from “hold” at Maybank Investment Bank Bhd, after first quarter profit jumped 77 per cent from a year earlier.

The share price estimate was increased to RM5.50 from RM4.60, Maybank Investment said in a report today. -- Bloomberg

GUINNESS vs CARLSBERG

GUINNESS

1Q EPS = 8.85
2Q EPS = 14.5
3Q EPS = 15.38
4Q EPS = ?? take previous 4Q as guide = 9.07

Estimated total EPS = 47.8sen
Estimated PE = 14.47sen
Div Yield = 6%
Div Payout Ratio = 41/47 = 87%

CARLSBERG

1Q EPS = 7.00
2Q EPS = 4.28
3Q EPS = 7.1
4Q EPS = 6.57
Total EPS = 25.02sen
Estimated PE = 19.58sen
Div Yield = 5%
Div Payout Ratio = 92%

Obviously on paper, GAB provide a better deal than CARLBG. GAB give a better earnings as well as DY, probably due to its better market shares captured in Malaysia but certainly we cannot discount CARLSBG's potential in catching up especially we have yet to see the actual synergies contribution from CARLBG (S) as yet. Further development on both would be very interesting on the coming World Cup 2010 as i believed not only GAB will get a lift on this event. CARLSBG would also benefited from it. After all preferences & flavour still lie on individual interest no mater how.

World Cup 2010 to give Guinness Anchor a lift, says OSK Research

KUALA LUMPUR: OSK Investment Research has maintained its buy call on GUINNESS ANCHOR BHD [] (GAB) at RM6.91 with target price RM7.35, and said the company's earnings were within expectations, with the bottom line figures to date accounting for 76.5% and 78.3% of OSK Research's and consensus estimates.

Moving into 4Q10 (April-June), it said sales would remain firm on intensified promotion activities in view of the 2010 World Cup Soccer season.

Since the Malaysian brewery industry rides on seasonal and event factors, the World Cup has been a positive factor for the industry every four years, it said.

The research house expects GAB to see robust numbers in the next quarter, although strong competition from its closest competitor means the risk of downside to earnings will persist.

"We see the stronger earnings on the 2010 World Cup soccer season lifting earnings in 4Q and meeting our earnings forecast.

"As we are making no changes to our earnings estimates or valuation parameters, we maintain our discounted cash flow-derived target price for GAB at RM7.35, with our buy recommendation intact," it said.

Carlsberg to cost more next month

"the impact of the price increase on Carlsberg’s earnings, if any, would be marginal."
"We don’t foresee earnings being bumped up"
==> It seem earnings would be stagnant/marginal increase.

Asked about prospects, Ravn said the company had a “good feeling” about this year. “We think the industry will grow by about 2% after contracting last year.”
For Carlsberg, it would ride on the synergies it would continue to create with Carlsberg Singapore Pte Ltd as well as further develop new products to capture higher sales,
==> The "good feeling" worth a growth rate of 2%. Huh... finally, new products is the right way to do to capture higher sales. Keep up the good work. !!

Managing director says company playing catch-up with increase in raw material prices
KUALA LUMPUR: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will increase the prices of its beer and stout products by an average of about 3% next month, says managing director Soren Ravn.
“We are trying to play catch-up with the rise (in price) of raw materials such as malt and hops which have increased 10% on average over the past five years,” he told reporters after a shareholders’ meeting yesterday.
Ravn said the company had last year increased prices only “slightly”, taking into consideration the economic downturn of 2008 and its flow-through effect on consumers last year.
It is understood that the average annual increase on Carlsberg products over the past five years is about 2%.
We are trying to play catch-up with the price rise says CARLSBERG BREWERY MALAYSIA BHD MD SOREN RAVN ON THE 3% INCREASE NEXT MONTH

The price increase would be industry wide, according to Ravn.
OSK Research Sdn Bhd analyst Vincent Lim, who covers the company, said the impact of the price increase on Carlsberg’s earnings, if any, would be marginal.
“They have been doing this historically, it’s just simply to pass on costs to consumers. We don’t foresee earnings being bumped up,” he said.
Asked about prospects, Ravn said the company had a “good feeling” about this year. “We think the industry will grow by about 2% after contracting last year.”
For Carlsberg, it would ride on the synergies it would continue to create with Carlsberg Singapore Pte Ltd as well as further develop new products to capture higher sales, Ravn said.
Carlsberg Malaysia, which is a 51%-owned unit of Denmark-based Carlberg AS, acquired Carlsberg Singapore for RM370mil in the fourth quarter last year.
Carlsberg Malaysia has a profit guarantee of S$24mil from the acquisition for the financial years ending Dec 31, 2009 (FY09) and FY10.
Chairman Datuk Lim Say Chong said the company, which enjoys the lion share of the local beer market, was expected to pay out 50% to 70% of distributable profits this financial year.
The group distributed 69% of its FY09 net profit to shareholders.
For FY09, Carlsberg reported a net profit of RM75.9mil against RM76.1mil in FY08.
Among its most popular brands are Carlsberg Green, Skol, Royal Stout, Carlsberg Gold and Carlsberg Special Brew, which accounted for 95% of the company’s total sales last year.

Carlsberg Declares a Better Dividend

Carlsberg just declared a Final Dividend of 7.5 Sen and Special Dividend of 10.5 Sen, total up to 18sen for it 4Q result. Financial year end net profit of 75m almost on par with its previous year. Not a bad start for 2010. The 18sen dividend will represent a 4% dividend yield base on current price at RM4.56.
Expected to have a better earning coming Q in 2010 when Carlsberg (S) is able to contribute at least 50% of revenue to Carlsberg (M) after the acquisition. Furthermore a proposal to Purchase the Companys Own Shares of up to 10% of its issued and fully paid-up share capital. Thus, i believe we should have a better year to come for 2010.

What can we expect from CarlsBerg in 2010 ??

Let assume the buy over of Carlsberg Singapore run smoothly and the crunching of estimated figures are as follows :-
On assumption profit for years 2009 & 2010 remain the same as in 2008 for Carlsberg (M) & Carlsberg (S)……..

Total acquisition = RM 370m
Carslberg (M) Cash Balance = RM 231m
Borrowings to finance the acquisition = RM 150m
Gearing ~ 150/370 = 0.4 times (acceptable to me)
***Note : Borrowings may not occur as it may accumulate sufficient fund before 2009 end.

Carlsberg (M) Net Profit (Year 2008) = RM 76m
Singapore to contribute est 50% net profit to Carlsberg (M) in 2010
= 76 + (76 * 0.5) = RM 114 m

Conservatively 50% of the net profit will be used to pay dividend = 114/2 = RM 57m

1000units holding of Carlsberg will get a dividend of = 57m/308m = RM185

This represent a dividend percentage of = 185/4600 x 100 = 4% for year 2010 still better than 2009... :)

EPS = 114m/308m = 37sen

PE = 4.6/0.37 = 12sen (Not bad)

Compare to its peer GUINNESS stood at PE 14sen.

Fair value for Carlsberg (M) = 14 x 0.37 = RM5.18 ... :)

Beside what you get for above, do consider the following cost saving measure as well :-

1) The operational synergies where it would shift sourcing back to Carlsberg (M).
2) Advertising and promotions would enjoy double tax deduction.

I own some Carlsberg shares while writing this, join me if you want…. :)
