Proton compact to be ‘game changer’

SHAH ALAM: DRB-HICOM Bhd has spent RM500 million to develop the all-new Proton Compact Car (PCC) and is confident that the massive investment will be worthwhile.

Proton Holdings Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah said the national carmaker has been struggling in the domestic market and hopefully, the PCC will reverse that.

“The PCC is the culmination of the hard work of 13,000 Proton workers over the past four years at a development and conceptual cost of RM500 million. I don’t want to make any sales target yet or reveal the model name but it will be a game changer and will meet head-on with its competitors,” he said at a media preview of the PCC, here, yesterday.

Harith said Proton, which is owned by DRBHICOM, will launch the PCC on September 25 at its manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

It will most probably be unveiled by Proton chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he added.

Harith said the PCC is not an A-segment car (1.5-litre engine and below) and it will be unveiled to stakeholders, vendors and 400 dealers at the launch.

“On September 27 and 28, there will be an open day, such as test drives for the public and others.”

Industry sources have speculated that the PCC will be named Iriz, with a starting price of RM40,000.

Public Investment Bank Bhd believes that the PCC is a mass-market car that will be critical for Proton to achieve the economies of scale to turn profitable.

The firm estimated that the break-even overall sales volume for Proton is 150,000 units annually.

“We are positive on the latest development on the PCC and maintain our ‘outperform’ call on DRB-HICOM,” it said in a report last week.

Proton hopes that the PCC will make a breakthrough in the domestic market before it is exported.

The PCC meets the safety standard of the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme.

It comes with the standard, executive and premium variants of 1.3L and 1.6L engine capacity. It offers sculpted seats, hill-hold assist to prevent the car from rolling backwards when stopping at uphill terrain, an electronic brake distribution, traction control and anti-lock braking systems and six airbags.

Part of the PCC’s structure is manufactured using the hot press forming method, which produces metal that is five times stronger and will not easily crumple in the event of an accident

MB S'gor hadir majlis materai perjanjian air
